Nature of Practice:
General practice with an emphasis on trial practice.
Approximately 400 jury trials,
about half civil and half criminal. Most of the civil trials
have been plaintiff’s personal injury but have included RICO,
trade secret, patent, tax fraud, anti-trust, med-mal defense,
cable TV rights, and constitution and commercial cases.
Criminal cases have included everything from speeding to capital
murder.
Personal
Information, Activities, Hobbies:
Phil is a life-long member of Christ Episcopal Church in
Martinsville, Virginia where he has served on the vestry, taught
Youth and Adult Sunday School, is a Lay Reader and has served on
many committees. Phil’s wife of 34 years, Lynn, is an
accomplished musician and is retired from over 20 years as
organist and choir director at Christ Episcopal Church. Phil and
Lynn have 4 sons. Their oldest son, John, is an Episcopal priest
in Milwaukee. Jason is a Deputy District Attorney for the City of
Portland, Oregon. Thomas is an aspiring jazz musician in Richmond,
Virginia. Michael graduates from Hampton Sydney College in May of
2005.
Phil does not have much spare
time, but when he has it, he is either on his John Deere tractor working the 100-acre family farm, or on his Harley
Davidson, and occasionally goes fly fishing and
grouse hunting.
Phil is a strong believer and
advocate of the obligation of lawyers to serve the community and
do pro bono work. During his entire career, he has handled many
court appointed and pro bono cases. For the last several
years, Phil has appeared on a weekly public information
television call in show, which is a public service to the
community providing free information to callers who have
legal questions. |

Hobbies:
Len and his wife, Bonnie, who are
life-long residents of Martinsville & Henry County, have two
children. Bonnie, a full-time mom and volunteer, holds a B.S.
degree in psychology from Averett University and has taught
Exceptional children for the last four years in the Pittsylvania
County School System. Britney, their oldest child, was
Co-Valedictorian of the Martinsville High School Class of 2000.
She received a B.A. degree in both economics and English in 2004
from the University of Virginia and is presently employed as a
financial analyst with Pacific Alternative Asset Management
Company in Irvine, California. Their son, Cabell, also a
graduate of Martinsville High School, is presently finishing up
his 2nd year at Hampden-Sydney College. Cabell was
recently elected to the Student Court and admitted to The
Society of 1791, as well as the Wilson Center Public Service Certificate
Program.
Len’s greatest enjoyment has always been spending time with his
wife and kids. In his spare time, Len especially enjoys fishing
and duck hunting. Duck hunting in Stuttgart, Arkansas with his
son, Cabell, has been an annual event for many years now. This
has become a valued tradition for Len, and is much like
experiences that Len shared with his own dad. Also, periodic
jaunts to California allow Len and Bonnie to catch up with their
daughter, Britney, and have a little fun in the sun.
Since
childhood, Len has been a member of Starling Avenue Baptist
Church, and he continues to be active in that congregation.
